The Local Authority admits children to the school by using the criteria set down in their brochure ‘A Partnership with Parents’. Normally priority is given to children who live with parents or guardians within the catchment area of the school.
It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that they apply for a school place for their children when entering Reception for the first time. Many parents are surprised at how far in advance they need to apply for a school place for their child, who may only be 3 years old at the time of applying.
Some parents may have concerns about their child beginning school because they are very young and they do not feel they are ready for full time education. There are options for parents to consider as long as they comply with the law which requires pupils to be in full time education from the beginning of the term following their 5th birthday.
Your child can start Reception in September 2021 if their Date of Birth is between:
1st September 2016 - 31st August 2017
Applications are invited every Autumn term (mid-September/early October) and the closing date for submitting applications is 15th January. You can apply online at https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/home/schools-childcare/apply-school-place or alternatively you can use the application form below. There is also a guide for parents and carers regarding entry to Primary School below.
Reception
Children transfer into Reception classes in September. Before the start of the school year, the school offer the opportunity to visit the setting and meet the teachers. They will spend time with your child in their current Nursery provision to learn more about them and their achievements. Often, where families are new to our school, staff will complete a home visit too. When a place is offered, introductory visits are arranged between home and school and children have the opportunity to attend the set transition days.
At Southey Green, we aim to provide a happy and secure environment in which every child can experience a wide variety of learning opportunities as well as being able to play co-operatively alongside and with other children. The planned Foundation Stage curriculum builds upon the skills and understanding which each child has already acquired, and develops them in all areas of their learning and development, including social, emotional, physical and intellectual.
Key Stage 1 and 2
Children move into Year 1 in the September following their admission into the Reception classes.
Children continue to move through the year groups each September until they are ready to transfer at the end of Year 6 into secondary education.
Any parent wishing to visit the school before applying for admission for their child is more than welcome to do so. Please phone for an appointment.
When your child transfers from (Nursery) or starts at our school you will be invited to attend a pre admissions meeting. Here you will be asked to complete a detailed admission form and receive important information about the school. Please bring along with you your child’s birth certificate or passport and completed admission form.
