Welcome to Year 5!
Class Teachers: Mrs Lemm, Miss Bridge, Miss Balding and Mr Taylor
At Southey Green, we promise to provide our children with 6 unique experiences in each year group. We call these ‘Southey’s Super Six’. These tasks give our children something to look forward to each year and in places, provide an opportunity that the children may not have previously had.
Take a look at our topics for this coming year. We intend to teach the children a wide range of skills alongside an array of knowledge for each unit. There may be slight changes throughout the year depending on weather, availability and other opportunities that arise.
Our Learning In Year Five
This half-term, the children have settled in really well and have been enjoying lots of fun learning opportunities. In art, we have been exploring one of the great pioneers of abstract art – Wassily Kandinsky. As well as exploring a variety of painting techniques, we also used colour to create different moods and generated our own colour mood wheel to help us with this. Finally, we re-created one of Kandinsky’s famous pieces called ‘Concentric Circles’. As you can see, everyone did a fabulous job and should be really proud of their artwork!
Our focus in science this half-term, the children have been learning all about electricity. Over the last few weeks, they have been learning how to create their own circuits and have been exploring what they need to make a circuit work.
In addition to this, we have been learning all about the Victorians in history, which the children have thoroughly enjoyed. As well as writing a biography about Queen Victoria, they were incredibly enthusiastic about investigating lots of Victorian artefacts and generated lots of brilliant ideas about what life might have been like in the Victorian era. We also created some fantastic posters about Victorian toys and discussed how they are different to toys we have now.
Finally, we have been learning about Christianity in R.E. The children explored a range of important parables and participated in some brilliant discussions about the meaning behind them. For the story of ‘The Prodigal Son’, 5SB took part in an exciting role play activity where they explored the theme of forgiveness.
We would just like to say thank you to all the children in Year 5 for settling in so well and working so hard this half-term. Have a restful half-term and we can’t wait to see everyone in Autumn 2!
