Ready. Respectful. Responsible.

Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

Class Teachers: Miss Bentley, Mr Knowles and Mrs Digby

At Southey Green, we promise to provide our children with 6 unique experiences in each year group. We call these ‘Southey’s Super Six’. These tasks give our children something to look forward to each year and in places, provide an opportunity that the children may not have previously had.

Take a look at our topics for this coming year. We intend to teach the children a wide range of skills alongside an array of knowledge for each unit. There may be slight changes throughout the year depending on weather, availability and other opportunities that arise.

Autumn 1 Best Bits!

In Year 5, we have had a fantastic half term full of fabulous learning and experiences. In History, We have been learning all about Victorians and had the opportunity to visit Beamish, an open air museum allowing the children to experience Victorian Britain in real life! We have also had access to a Victorian artefacts box filled with some amazing authentic Victorian objects.

In art, we have been focusing on work by Wassily Kandinsky. We used different brush strokes to create a variety of affects, colours to create mood and monochromatic tones to create some fantastic pieces art work this half term.

The children have also started their journey to learning the cornet. Working with Mr Harris to develop their musicality initially using the Pbuzz.

In Year 5, we have been doing some fabulous learning! We had an amazing time inviting the Year 5 parents into school during our ‘Book, bun and brew’ event earlier this term. The children absolutely loved having their parents in school.

In geography, we have been learning all about Australia and done some amazing work on time zones, regions and biomes.

In science, we have been learning about the lifecycles of different animals and the children have really enjoyed discovering how these different animals grow and change within their lives.

We have continued our work with Mr Harris on the Pbuzz and the children are now working on their performance piece.

Spring Best Bits

We have absolutely loved working our way into the land of Neverbelieve! This weird and wonderful land has been used to inspire some amazing writing as you can see from the photos. Not only did we stretch our imaginations, but we also stretched our literacy writing skills by using a range of figurative language including personification! We are ever so proud of our achievements!
