Welcome to Year 5!
Class Teachers: Miss Bentley, Mrs Digby, Miss West and Mr Taylor
At Southey Green, we promise to provide our children with 6 unique experiences in each year group. We call these ‘Southey’s Super Six’. These tasks give our children something to look forward to each year and in places, provide an opportunity that the children may not have previously had.
Take a look at our topics for this coming year. We intend to teach the children a wide range of skills alongside an array of knowledge for each unit. There may be slight changes throughout the year depending on weather, availability and other opportunities that arise.
We have had an exciting, enthralling half term in year 5. In Literacy, we have become detectives in investigating a crime. We have used forensic techniques such as analysing fingerprints and used PH indicators, alongside other scientific techniques, to eliminate some of the suspects. This, alongside a description of the crime scene, reviewing suspects statements and examining evidence led to the arrest of the culprit. The children were then asked to write a detailed police report of their findings. In geography, we have been learning about Mexico and mountains and have compared the UK’s physical and human features with Mexico. In addition to this we have continued with our magnificent materials science topic, where the children have been experimenting with different solutes and solvents to investigate processes such as dissolving, filtration, evaporation and saturation. We are all looking forward to what Summer 1 will bring!
