Year 5
Welcome to Year 5!
Class Teachers: Miss Jordan, Miss Pearson and Mr Russell
Year 5 is a year of growing maturity, deeper learning and exciting new challenges. As children move closer to the top of Key Stage 2, they begin to take greater responsibility for their learning and behaviour, developing independence, resilience and leadership skills. Our classrooms are a supportive and stimulating environment where children are encouraged to think critically, work collaboratively and strive to achieve their personal best.
We continue to build on core subjects like English and maths, while exploring a broad and engaging curriculum that includes science, history, geography, art, music and computing. Children also enjoy opportunities to take part in enrichment activities and wider roles within the school community. Year 5 is a time to grow in confidence, embrace new experiences and prepare for the exciting journey ahead in Year 6.
In Year 5, we continue to uphold our core values of being Ready to Learn, Respectful to All, and Responsible for Ourselves.
- Children get ready for lessons and responsibilities with confidence, they keep trying when things are tricky and know that being prepared helps them to do their best.
- Children are respectful, show kindness and include all. They celebrate what makes people different and help to make everyone feel welcome.
- Children are responsible. They organise things by themselves, take responsibility if mistakes are made and try to solve small problems without needing help.
Take a look at our topics for this coming year. We intend to teach the children a wide range of skills alongside an array of knowledge for each unit. There may be slight changes throughout the year depending on weather, availability and other opportunities that arise.

At Southey Green, we promise to provide our children with 6 unique experiences in each year group. We call these ‘Southey Super Six’. These tasks give our children something to look forward to each year and in places, provide an opportunity that the children may not have previously had.
