Year 2
Welcome to Year 2!
Class Teachers: Miss Ryan, Miss Vickerman, Miss Waterson and Miss King.
Year 2 is a year of growing confidence, independence and curiosity. As the final year of Key Stage 1, children build on their learning from Year 1 and begin to take more ownership of their progress. Our classroom is a supportive and stimulating environment where children are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas and challenge themselves.
We continue to develop key skills in reading, writing, and maths, while deepening understanding across a broad and balanced curriculum. From exciting science investigations to creative art projects and engaging history topics, learning in Year 2 is hands-on and meaningful. We also prepare children for the transition into Key Stage 2, helping them become resilient, responsible learners who are ready for the next step in their journey.
In Year 2, we help children grow into confident and caring learners by focusing on the values of being Ready to Learn, Respectful to All and Responsible for Ourselves.
- We encourage children to come to school ready and prepared and eager to take part in every lesson, showing enthusiasm and staying focused on tasks even when things are tricky.
- Being respectful to all means treating everyone with kindness, listening carefully, and celebrating our differences.
- We also learn to be responsible for ourselves—taking care of our belongings, making good choices, and thinking about how our actions affect others. These values guide us every day and help create a happy, safe, and supportive learning environment.
Take a look at our topics for this coming year. We intend to teach the children a wide range of skills alongside an array of knowledge for each unit. There may be slight changes throughout the year depending on weather, availability and other opportunities that arise.

At Southey Green, we promise to provide our children with 6 unique experiences in each year group. We call these 'Southey Super Six'. These tasks give our children something to look forward to each year and in places, provide an opportunity that the children may not have previously had.

Reading and Writing- Burglar Bill
A unit the children really enjoyed this half term was Burglar Bill. We read the story Burglar Bill by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. The children really loved this story! They used props to retell the story and hot-seating to discuss how the characters were feeling throughout. The children then developed their writing skills. We focused on using capital letters for proper nouns, commas in a list and adverbs of place. The children wrote some amazing sentences! We are focusing on perfect letter formation this half term, their handwriting is really starting to improve. Well done Y2!
Elm Lane Fire Station Trip
This half term, we’ve been diving into the history learning of the Great Fire of London—and what better way to start than with a real-life fire station visit! Year 2 headed to Elm Lane Fire Station for an action-packed morning behind the scenes. We were given a guided tour of the station and discovered where firefighters work, train to stay strong and even sleep when on duty. The team showed us their brand-new fire engine, packed with incredible tools and equipment ready for any emergency. To top it all off, we got the chance to test out the fire hose ourselves. It was an unforgettable experience full of fun, learning, and plenty of water!
