Welcome to Year 5!

Class Teachers: Miss Bentley, Mr Knowles and Mrs Digby

At Southey Green, we promise to provide our children with 6 unique experiences in each year group. We call these ‘Southey’s Super Six’. These tasks give our children something to look forward to each year and in places, provide an opportunity that the children may not have previously had.

Take a look at our topics for this coming year. We intend to teach the children a wide range of skills alongside an array of knowledge for each unit. There may be slight changes throughout the year depending on weather, availability and other opportunities that arise.

In Year 5 we have been doing some amazing learning!

Within art, we have been looking at the artist Wassily Kandinsky. We looked at how his art changed over time and moved from realism to using basic shapes to produce his landscaped. We explored the use of shade and tint and how that affects the mood of the painting and had a go at mixing tertiary colours to produce our final piece.

For French day, we focussed a lot of our time exploring the country of France. We learnt a lot about the French culture and learnt that a delicacy was escargot and frogs legs. We then explored the capital city of Paris and learnt all about the Eiffel Tower. We had a go at creating the Eiffel Tower out of art straws and produced some lovely final pieces. At the end of the day, we put everything we learnt together into a big poster.

In English, we wrote a character description based around the character of Fagin and we have just started writing our setting description of Diagon Alley. We even designed our own potions shop that would be right at home on there.

In Geography, we have started our Australia topic. We had our first lesson looking at all the animals that live there and created a poster all about it.
